How to read a firefly's flash
The four questions above are the ones a specialist asks, in the order they ask them. Here is what each is really getting at, so the answers get easier every time you go out.
The light is a sentence, not a lamp
A firefly is a beetle, and its light is a cold chemical reaction, so there is no heat in it at all. What matters for identification is that the light is a signal. In most species the ones flying and flashing are males, advertising as they go, and the females answer from a perch in the grass or a branch.
That is why the pattern carries so much information. Two species living in the same field can look identical pinned in a drawer and still never confuse each other, because they are saying different things at different times of the evening.
Watch one insect, not the whole field
This is the single habit that improves your identification fastest. Pick one firefly and follow it for thirty seconds. A field full of lights averages out into an impression, and an impression is not a flash pattern.
Then ask what it did. A single flash, then a long wait? A short train of pulses? A steady lamp that stays lit while the insect moves? Photinus pyralis, the one most Americans grew up with, flies a rising J-shape and flashes at the bottom of it, which is a whole identification on its own once you have seen it. Lampyris noctiluca does the opposite: the female does not fly at all and shines a continuous green light from the grass. Some species of Pteroptyx, the mangrove genus, return to the same trees night after night and flash together, so it is the tree that pulses rather than any one insect.
Timing counts too. Many species have their own window, often only twenty or thirty minutes long, and a different species can take over the same field an hour later.
Colour is real, and it is hard at night
Firefly light runs from a warm amber through yellow-green to a cold bluish white, and it is a genuine difference between species. Phausis reticulata, the blue ghost, looks distinctly blue-white to most people beside a yellow flasher.
But your eyes give up colour in the dark before they give up motion, so a colour judged in the first minute outdoors is close to a guess. Give yourself fifteen minutes without looking at a phone, and compare two insects against each other rather than against a memory. This is why the guide treats colour as a hint and never rules a species out on it.
Where you are standing rules out more than anything else
Habitat and region do more work than either colour or pattern, because a firefly is somewhere for a reason. The larvae are predators that spend most of a year in damp ground eating snails and worms, so wet meadow, forest edge, stream bank and mangrove are not scenery, they are the requirement.
Region is blunter still. Most species occur on one continent, so knowing where you are removes most of the world's candidates before you have looked at a single flash. That is why this guide asks, and why it will rather tell you nothing than offer you a species from the wrong hemisphere.
"I am not sure" is a real answer
Every question here has an unsure option, and choosing it costs you nothing. It is skipped rather than counted against anything, because a guessed answer puts invented information into the result and a blank one does not.
If the guide ends with no match, that is usually the truth rather than a failure. It covers a small number of well-documented species, and there are more than two thousand in the world. Log the sighting as unidentified and write down what you did see: the colour, the rhythm, the habitat, the time. A record like that can be identified by somebody else years later. A guess cannot be un-guessed.
