Long before cameras existed, people tried to capture the glow of fireflies. Japanese woodblock painters painted dark summer nights with soft yellow dots over quiet rivers. Even in South America, observations of the Spotted Tortoise Firefly came in from General Sarmiento, Argentina, and Alagoas, Brazil. Meanwhile, in Mexico City, spotters logged Photinus extensus. Each species writes its own light story in the night sky.
