The adult female European glow-worm looks like a small, flat insect. She is dark brown or gray and about fifteen millimetres long. She does not have useful wings. She cannot fly away if a bird comes near. She cannot fly to find a mate.

If you visit a park at night in Europe during August, do not look up at the trees. Keep your eyes low to the ground. Look at the bases of grass clumps and along stone walls.

Snail Soup: The Life of a Glow-Worm Larva

Adult glow-worms only live for a few weeks in the summer. They do not even eat during their adult lives. They use up energy that they stored when they were young. All of their growing happens during the larval stage.

The larva is the baby stage of the beetle. It looks like a tiny, dark armored crawling bug with light spots along its sides. Glow-worm larvae live for one or two years on the damp ground before they turn into adults.

During those long months, the larva is an active hunter. Its favorite food is snails and slugs.

First, the ground stays moist enough for snails. If a meadow dries out completely or gets covered in asphalt, the snails die or move away. Without snails, the glow-worm larvae starve.

Second, the soil has not been poisoned by heavy chemicals. Strong bug sprays and weed killers kill soil life. They wipe out snails, soft larvae, and soil worms. A glowing female means the ground beneath her has been safe from harsh chemicals for at least two years.

Third, the area is dark enough at night for glow-worms to breed.

How Streetlights Break the Secret Code

Light pollution is one of the biggest threats to European glow-worms today. Light pollution happens when artificial light from streetlamps, porch lights, and glowing signs shines into natural spaces at night.

A female glow-worm relies on darkness to stand out. Her green light is very bright in the dark, but it is hard to see under a bright white streetlight.

When artificial light floods a grassy bank, the flying male gets confused. He might fly toward the bright streetlamp instead of looking down at the grass. Or he might simply miss the faint green dot on the ground because the background is too bright.

If the male cannot find the female, they cannot mate. The female will sit on her blade of grass night after night, shining her light until her energy runs out. If she does not mate before her energy runs out, she dies without laying eggs.

This is why glow-worms are disappearing from many town centers and busy roadsides. They need dark nights to find each other.

Keep outdoor lights off when you do not need them. Put security lights on motion sensors so they turn off automatically.

Leave a patch of your garden wild. Let the grass grow long in a corner, and leave fallen leaves under shrubs. This gives snails and larvae a moist place to live.

Avoid using chemical weed killers and bug sprays in your garden. Natural gardens support a rich food web of insects, snails, and beetles.
