Finding a Beetle That Does Not Look Like a Beetle
To understand the European Glow-Worm, you have to know that the males and females look completely different. Adult males actually have wings. They look a lot more like traditional beetles, and they can fly around. But the females look very different. Even when they grow up into adults, they keep their larval form. They look like dark, segmented grubs or crawling armor plates.
Because the females do not have wings, they cannot fly up into the air to flash at mates. Instead, they climb up high on grass stems or rocks. Once they reach a good viewing spot, they turn on their tail lights and wait. They shine that bright green light to catch the attention of flying males passing overhead. If you are walking through a field at night, you will find these glowing females sitting entirely still on low plants, acting like tiny runway lights in the grass.
How to Recognize the Glow
Many fireflies in North America and Asia communicate with complicated flash patterns. One species might trace out a glowing J-shape in the air. Another might flash twice in quick succession. These patterns help males and females of the exact same species find each other in the dark.
The European Glow-Worm does things differently. The female does not flash a code. She just turns her light on and leaves it glowing for hours. It is a steady, continuous chemical reaction happening inside her tail. If a flying male sees that steady green beacon, he flies down to investigate.

They like places with plenty of natural cover, such as long grass, hedgerows, old stone walls, and woodland borders. These spots provide cool, moist places for the insects to rest during the day.
What the Glow-Worm Tells Us About Habitat
Finding a European Glow-Worm tells a big story about the health of a piece of land. These beetles have a very specific diet when they are young. Before they grow up, the larvae hunt snails and slugs.
A baby glow-worm tracks a snail's slimy trail through the grass. Once it catches up, it uses sharp mouthparts to inject a special liquid into the snail. This liquid numbs the prey and turns the inside into a soft meal that the larva can slurp up. It sounds a bit spooky, but it is an important part of how nature keeps food webs balanced.
Because young glow-worms depend entirely on snails, they can only live where snails can live. Snails need damp soil, rotting wood, and plants that are free from harsh chemical sprays. If a farmer or a homeowner covers a garden in strong bug sprays and weed killers, the snails die off. When the snails disappear, the young glow-worms starve.
On top of that, adult glow-worms rely entirely on their ability to see the female's glow in the dark. If a neighborhood installs bright, glaring streetlights or security floodlights, the night sky and the ground get washed out in artificial light.
