When you step outside into your yard on a warm night, your eyes take time to adjust. If you turn on a bright phone screen or a white flashlight, you instantly ruin that night vision. It takes your eyes up to twenty minutes to adjust back to the dark. Fireflies experience something very similar, but their lives depend on the dark.
People all over the world are logging fireflies right now. Observers recently spotted the Common Eastern Firefly in places like Cumming, Georgia, and Ellicott City, Maryland. Others are finding the European Glow-worm in Eiken, Switzerland, and Meaux in France. Some watchers in Taiwan are tracking the Rimmed Window Firefly, while people in South Korea are noting Pyrocoelia rufa. Whether you are looking at a flashing bug or a steady glowing beetle, watching them requires patience and care.
Why White Light Hurts Fireflies
Fireflies use light to talk to each other. A male flashes a specific pattern to catch the eye of a female waiting in the grass. When humans shine bright white lights, we flood the dark with a glare that drowns out these tiny signals. It is like trying to whisper a secret across a loud concert. The fireflies cannot see each other's signals through the glare, so they stop trying to find mates.
White light also stresses out the insects. A sudden blast of light can make a firefly freeze or fly away in panic. Imagine trying to sleep in your room, and someone suddenly turns on a giant stadium floodlight right in your face. You would probably want to pack up and leave. Fireflies need the dark to do their most important work.
The Power of Red Light
If you want to walk around looking for fireflies without bothering them, switch to a red light. You can cover an ordinary flashlight with a piece of red cellophane or use a headlamp with a red bulb setting.
Red light has a longer wavelength than white light. This means it carries less energy and does not mess up your eyes' dark adaptation. Human eyes are less sensitive to red wavelengths, and many insects do not see red light the same way they see harsh white light. Using a red beam lets you look at your map or check your path without blinding the local bugs.
Letting Your Eyes Adapt
To really see what is happening in the dark, you have to wait. When you first walk outside from a lit house, you will probably only see big shapes. Stand still for ten or fifteen minutes without looking at any screens. Slowly, the shadows will sharpen. You will start to notice the faint green flicker of a Common Eastern Firefly near the bushes or the steady amber glow of a European Glow-worm in the grass.
This waiting period is called dark adaptation. It is your built-in night vision kicking in. Once your eyes adjust, you do not need a flashlight at all. The ambient light from the moon and stars is usually enough to guide your steps.
How to Photograph Fireflies Without a Flash
Taking pictures of glowing bugs is tricky. Many people pull out their phones, turn on the camera, and fire off a bright flash. That flash ruins the photo. It turns the dark background into a pitch-black void and washes out the tiny bug's gentle light.
Instead, you need to shoot in near-darkness using ordinary equipment. If your phone has a night mode or a manual settings option, use it. Prop your phone on a small tripod, a stack of books, or even a flat rock so it does not shake. Set the camera to a longer exposure time, which lets the lens gather light for a few seconds instead of a split second.
Do not use a flash. Let the sensor soak up the natural glow of the insects over three or five seconds while the camera stays completely still. You might only capture streaks of light, but those streaks prove the insects are active in that spot.
Etiquette at a Shared Viewing Spot
Sometimes a bunch of people gather in a park or a neighborhood trail to watch a heavy emergence of fireflies. When you share a viewing spot with others, good manners matter just as much as good science.
Keep your voice down. Shouting can disturb other people who are trying to watch the wildlife. More importantly, keep your phone in your pocket. If twenty people stand in a field with their phone screens turned up to full brightness, they create an artificial sunrise that shuts down the entire local firefly display.
