Visiting Masungi's Fireflies

Late August brings a quiet kind of magic to the Masungi Georeserve in the Philippines. As the sun drops behind the limestone rocks, the shadows grow long. The jungle canopy cools down. Out in the damp air, tiny flashes of light begin to wink on and off. If you are standing on the trail right now, you might spot one up close — and run straight into a surprising fact. Why Fireflies Need Our Help

Watching fireflies is wonderful, but it also reminds us how fragile they are. Fireflies need damp soil, tall grass, and clean water to survive when they are growing up as larvae. Long before they ever learn to fly and flash, baby fireflies spend months crawling around in the dirt and mud. They hunt for small snails and soft-bodied bugs. If a patch of woods is paved over, or if a wet meadow is dried out to build houses, the snails disappear. When the snails are gone, the firefly larvae have nothing to eat.

Another big problem for fireflies is light pollution. That is the glow from streetlights, porch lights, and glowing signs that floods our neighborhoods at night. Fireflies use their flashes to talk to each other and find mates. If the night sky is too bright, the fireflies cannot see each other's signals. It is like trying to whisper a secret message across a room while someone is banging on a drum. The message gets lost in the noise.
